Kahurangi Toi Ātea
NATIONAL SCREEN SKILLS TRAINING PROGRAMME
Fast track your career in the screen industry by gaining hands-on, real-world training and experience.
Mā mua ka kite a muri, mā muri ka ora a mua.
Those who lead give sight to those who follow, those who follow give life to those who lead.
Kahurangi Toi Ātea is the name gifted to the National Screen Industry Skills Programme by Takitimu. It provides a rich context of the heavenly cloak (the stars) and has provided inspiration for storytelling for generations.
Kahurangi Toi Ātea is an industry led programme and provides participants with the opportunity to learn specific departmental skills from professionals and apply these on set of a large scale production.
SUPPORTED BY
NZ ON AIR & NETFLIX
NZ On Air partnered for the first time with Netflix to fund Kahurangi Toi Ātea a NZQA-recognised screen
workforce development programme to produce industry-ready screen practitioners
by training crew on the job.
NZ On Air Head of Funding Amie Mills says there has been a documented crew shortage for some time, and the agency has a role to play in uplifting capability. This aligns with the Government’s ambitions in the Amplify creative and cultural strategy.
“There is no substitute for learning your craft on a real production alongside the heads of department and senior practitioners who have built their careers doing this mahi. Kahurangi Toi Ātea gives that experience formal structure and an NZQA credential – and a clearer pathway into the industry. We want production companies building their crew pipelines through it, and education providers connecting into it. The talent is here. This programme is designed to be taken up by the whole sector, and to grow with it,” says Mills.
BUILDING THE NEXT GENERATION OF SCREEN PROFESSIONALS
Kahurangi Toi Ātea is a pathway for screen industry trainees to be mentored by experienced practitioners and obtain valuable on-set experience.
It also provides a link for productions in both Film and TV to connect with trainees who are set ready and able to obtain pastoral support as they work in this pressured environment. This provides a production support to ensure they are working with the trainee to suit the teams needs.
TRAINING STRANDS
The Art Department in a film production is responsible for creating the visual look and feel of the movie.
The Production Department is the core team responsible for overseeing all aspects of a film’s creation, from pre to post-production.
The Technical Department includes camera, sound, lighting, grip, and rigging teams. They manage all technical aspects.
The Logistics Department manages the coordination and movement of resources crucial for the production’s smooth operation.
The Post-Production Department on a film and TV set manages the overall project that will be delivered to an audience.
ON SET EXPERIENCE
IS EVERYTHING
The Kahurangi Toi Ātea training programme is a combination of classroom learning and on set experience on real screen productions across New Zealand.
Training programmes are attached to individual screen productions and are centred in the specific location the production is being produced. The current productions offering training programmes can be seen HERE. The strands offered will be subject to limitation of the production needs.
Great news! Many skills gained in other industries are transferable to the screen industry and will help you get qualified quicker.
