ABOUT
KAHURANGI TOI ĀTEA IS AN INDUSTRY LED PROGRAMME
Screen Industry training specialists, SHARE THE KNOWLEDGE and leading educational provider in Māori Performing Arts, TE WĀNANGA WHARE TAPERE O TAKITIMU, in partnership with INDUSTRY SCREEN TRAINING BOARD and with support from NZ on AIR and NETFLIX, have designed an industry-led screen industry skills programme for below the line crew – KAHURANGI TOI ĀTEA.
The programme was launched in Christchurch 2024 on the feature film HOLY DAYS, with the intention of developing a national programme of work-based training for the screen industry.
Each course has a classroom (preparation) & workplace (application) learning component for entry, intermediate and senior level roles within a film or TV production. At the end of the course, successful participants will be awarded a New Zealand Certificate in Screen Industry Skills.

PROGRAMME OVERVIEW
KAHURANGI TOI ĀTEA rolled-out with the feature film HOLY DAYS, 2024 in Canterbury. The production utilised University of Canterbury | Kōawa Studios and other locations.
Kahurangi Toi Ātea courses are divided into five strands: Art, Logistics, Production, Technical and Post-Production, from entry level to senior level; Levels 3-6.
Each course has two components: classroom (preparation) and workplace (application). Both components must be completed to receive the qualification, although they may be completed at different times.
The classroom component is open to Tauira (participants) nationwide, the workplace component selects from those who complete the classroom learning and only takes a certain number. Those who are not selected initially will then have the opportunity on a future project as a pipeline of work is established.
We encourage those who live elsewhere who wish to participate in the classroom learning (preparation), to engage with film or TV projects happening in their region. Tauira can apply to SHARE THE KNOWLEDGE to complete their workplace (application) training in their region on a specific project.
There are course fees for the classroom (preparation) and workplace (application) learning components of each course.
For the workplace learning component, Tauira will receive a nominal weekly wage.
All courses are designed and led by senior industry practitioners and Kahurangi Toi Ātea Kaiako (Tutors).

STEP 2:
In Class Learning
The classroom (preparation) component is open to Tauira (participants) nationwide and will take place where the production is being filmed.
STEP 3: Work Place Learning
Selected Tauira (participants) will learn and earn on-set on a feature film or television series.
STEP 4: Assessment
There will be a pass/fail assessment for classroom learning (preparation), as well as an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) designed for each workplace (application) learning participant.
