The Screen Industry Training Programme has been developed by Industry Experts and Educational specialists to fast-track talented, hardworking, innovative participants through a short course that targets key roles in screen production, providing a gateway to building a successful career in film and tv production.

There are two components: Classroom Learning and Workplace Learning.

On successful completion of the course, participants will be awarded a Certificate in Screen Craft Skills.

Classroom Learning is the first component of the Certificate in Screen Craft Skills ranging from levels 3 to 6.  Participants will be assessed by Te Wānanga Whare Tapere o Takitimu for both in class learning and workplace learning outcomes. The production will employ 21 successful participants (Christchurch based) for this case study. Other participants will have the opportunity to complete the work place learning on future productions as they are identified throughout New Zealand.

It is compulsory for Level 3 & 4 to complete the ‘Introduction to Screen Industry’ microcredential, which is an online course that you can do from home.

Level 3 & 4 will have an 11-day classroom course held at the University of Canterbury.

Level 5 will have a 15-day classroom course held at the University of Canterbury.

Level 6 will have a 17-day classroom course held at the University of Canterbury.

Please note; all participants will need to attend the classroom courses in-person at the University of Canterbury.

Workplace Learning is the second component of the Certificate in Screen Craft Skills.

The selected participants for the Workplace Learning will gain hands-on, real-world training and experience on the film production HOLY DAYS, during prep, shoot and wrap. The programme will immerse participants in the fast-paced environment of a live set.

There are limited spaces available for the Workplace Learning component.

The Workplace Learning participants will be selected by the Course Tutors from the Classroom Learning participants. If you are not selected to do the Workplace Learning, you can apply for other productions in your region.

Please note; that only participants from the Canterbury region are eligible to be selected for the Workplace Learning for the 2024 Programme.

For the 2024 Programme, only participants who live in the Canterbury region are eligible to be selected for the production HOLY DAYS, but once you have completed the Classroom Learning component, you are able to complete your Certificate of Screen Craft Skills on another production.

At the University of Canterbury, 20 Kirkwood Avenue, Christchurch, Canterbury 8041, New Zealand.

In and around Christchurch and the Canterbury region.

The course tutors are senior crew members from the New Zealand Screen Industry who have had years of experience on and off set. They are hand-picked by KAHURANGI TOI ATEA.

It is the participant’s responsibility to cover travel and accommodation while in Christchurch. We recommend working with your film community to brainstorm ideas for fundraising. If you are interested in participating in the course your Regional Film Office is a great resource to tap into for support.

As the courses have been designed by Screen Industry professionals, the Programme is specific to the roles that are needed on a production. Therefore, graduates from the Programme will be recognised as having specialised industry training, which makes their skills valuable, relevant and desirable to employers of screen projects.

The industry is hierarchical in its structure and the programme levels for each course, within each strand, indicate the employment opportunity pathway for the various departments.

KAHURANGI TOI ATEA will keep abreast of the upcoming projects and will update participants on when projects are coming to their area.
